Genetic Improvement of the Pee Dee Cotton Germplasm Collection following Seventy Years of Plant Breeding

چکیده
One of the most signifi cant, long-term public U.S. Upland cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) germplasm enhancement programs is known as the Pee Dee germplasm program. The unique, genetic foundation of the Pee Dee germplasm was created using germplasm from Upland, Sea Island (Gossypium barbadense L.), and primitive diploid cottons. Since the program’s inception in 1935, the Pee Dee germplasm program has released >80 improved germplasm lines and cultivars. In this study, the agronomic and fi ber quality performance of Pee Dee germplasm was evaluated across southeastern U.S. environments to estimate genetic improvement within the Pee Dee germplasm program. Results suggest that the Pee Dee germplasm enhancement program has (i) maintained usable genetic variation and (ii) maintained high fi ber quality potential while concomitantly improving agronomic performance. Although the results highlight the need to continue improving lint percent, lint yield, and bolls m−2, there is also evidence to suggest that Pee Dee germplasm can continue being utilized to develop the next generation of high-fi berquality and high-yielding cotton cultivars. Identification of genetic resources of field resistance to barley leaf rust in local germplasm of cultivated barley
The barley leaf rust has been important in recent years in Iran. In order to identify the genetic resources of resistance to this disease, 207 Iranian barley landraces were studied. The germplasms were investigated at the field of Iraqi-Mahalleh research station in Gorgan as the disease hotspot under natural incidence over three years. The results showed that four genotypes including KC18638 an...
متن کاملEvaluation and characterization of ICARDAelite germplasm of lentil
Food legumes are a central part of the diet for many communities around the world and lentil could be an excellent choice to provide more nutritious foods. Lentil breeding program aims to develop adapted, high yielding, biotic and abiotic tolerant varieties. The success of any breeding program is dependent on the availability of genetic materials with sufficient diversity. In order to investiga...
متن کاملAssessment of genetic variability, heritability and association of plant attributes with lint yield and fiber quality in advanced lines of cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.)
Information on genetic variability and heritability of plant attributes and their correlation with lint yield and fiber quality is important for planning breeding and selection strategies for prediction of genetic gains in cotton breeding programs. For these purpose, a field experiment was carried out using randomized complete block design with four replications in 2016 and 2017 at Hashem-Abad ...

متن کاملDevelopment of cultivated barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) germplasm core collection in the National Plant Gene Bank of Iran
The large number and high diversity of genetic resource collections usually affect the accuracy of assessment and exploitation of the potential of these resources. The core collection provides the solution for the challenges of genetic resources manegement. This study aimed to develop the core collection of native barley germplasm of Iran. The germplasm collection of barley germplasm (Hordeum v...
